Dear Fifty,
It is Christmas Eve morning at 5 AM. I’m just thinking this morning about so many who have impacted my life in such great ways. I could never name you all, there are so many. You know who you are. From the bottom of my heart, I offer my sincere thanks.
Obviously, by the time you read this, the Christmas holiday will have come and gone. Hope yours was the best ever! If you’re reading this, it’s because you are really, really important to someone. Thank you for all you do for those you love, for your community, your church, even for those you will never meet. Thank you for all you do.
Many years ago I learned a lesson from an old man who helped me out of a really bad situation. I was broke down and broke and a long, long way from home. He took care of my horse, helped me find used parts to my pickup, had his company mechanic get me back on the road. He charged me nothing for his time, his connections, his help. I don’t even think I offered to pay him…he knew my situation.
When I thanked him, he simply said, “Son, the only thing we leave behind is what we did for somebody else.” He was a crusty old guy, but lovable (kind of reminds me of another important character in my life). Anyway, I will never forget his name. With those few words, Richard Freugenberg of Memphis, Tennessee planted a seed. To this day, I share that story when I can. Today, I’m sharing it with you. This is the Readers Digest version. Sometime, if you’re interested, I’ll tell you the rest of the story.
With those few words (and actions), Richard changed a life. I already knew about service and sacrifice. My parents have always been very selfless, giving people. But this was different. This wasn’t sacrifice or service. Richard taught me about giving. That was almost thirty years ago and I’ve never forgotten.
I hope you’ve had a great holiday season, and that your 2020 is everything you hope for, filled with peace, success and joy. May your dreams come true. May you make a difference and be a hero to someone, as Richard was to me. I wish you all the best.
Thanks for reading this. If you have a story of inspiration, someone that made a difference to you, I would love to hear it. What, or more importantly, who comes to mind? Let’s talk soon!
All the best, from me to you,
